University’s Research Chair on Cancer
The University of Sherbrooke has over 40,000 students and offers more than 385 programs. The PRAC building hosts the University’s Research Chair on Cancer. The project consisted in the implementation of energy efficiency measures while taking into account a simultaneous extension (from a total of 7,800 m2 to 11,500 m2).
Energy Efficiency Measures
Modifications in the airflow distribution supply and exhaust
Installation of a high efficiency chiller equipped with a variable frequency drive
Installation of new pumps for coils and heat plate exchangers for energy recovery in the exhaust air to preheat the fresh air and domestic hot water
Installation of variable frequency drives
Installation of a new electric boiler
Installation of heat recovery on the chimney of the existing boiler
Modifications in the operation of the different systems in the building (air handling units, air distribution, cooling distribution, heating distribution, etc.)
Project Benefits
This project was a great success. In addition to increasing the comfort of the buildings’ occupants, the energy efficiency measures implemented resulted in reductions of the total energy consumption of the building by 58% by saving a total of $209,000 annually.
